Rosecrans and the 139th Airlift Wing

By Joe Nelson — Retired Air Force, Nelson Home Group Team Leader and Mortgage Loan Originator

Rosecrans Air National Guard Base sits in St. Joseph, Missouri, about an hour north of Kansas City, and it is home to the 139th Airlift Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard. I spent all 21 years of my career there, enlisted on C-130 propulsion and later commissioned as a maintenance officer, so this is the one page on this site I did not have to research to write. What follows is the wing, the base, and the housing question that comes with serving there.

This is one piece of a larger guide. For the full picture of buying and selling with a VA loan in Kansas City, start at our veterans hub.

What is the 139th Airlift Wing?

It is the Missouri Air National Guard wing based at Rosecrans, and its published mission is “First in Global Response, Tactical Airlift, and Homeland Support.” The wing gains to Air Mobility Command, and its motto, which anybody who served there can recite, is “Always Ready, Ever Willing.”

Structurally it runs four groups: the 139th Operations Group, the 139th Maintenance Group, the 139th Mission Support Group and the 139th Medical Group. The flying squadron is the 180th Airlift Squadron. The current wing commander is Col. Barrett W. Golden.

The wing describes its job as generating and sustaining combat ready aircrews capable of a wide range of operations across domestic response, national defense and humanitarian work. In practice that has meant a lot of different things over the years, which is the part of Guard service that surprises people who have only known active duty.

What makes Rosecrans different from most Guard bases?

It is the home of the Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Center, and that single fact changes the character of the installation. The AATTC’s mission is to increase the war fighting effectiveness and survivability of mobility forces, and it is now in its third decade of providing advanced tactical training to airlift aircrews from the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Command, Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command, Air Force Special Operations Command, the United States Marine Corps and 15 allied nations.

The wing also hosts the C-130H Weapons Instructor Course. So a base most Missourians drive past without noticing is a place where mobility crews from across the force, and from allied air forces, come to St. Joseph to train. If you are moving into this area because of an assignment there, you are joining something with more reach than the size of the ramp suggests.

What aircraft does the 139th fly?

The C-130 Hercules, and the fleet is in the middle of an upgrade worth knowing about. The wing has flown the C-130 H2 since 1987, and on November 4, 2025 it received its first H3 variant, transferred from the Montana Air National Guard’s 120th Airlift Wing. The H3 brings NP2000 eight bladed propellers and avionics upgrades including an electronic propeller control system, and the wing states the H3s are three to six years newer than its current H2.5 fleet.

One correction, because it comes up constantly. The 139th is not a MAFFS unit. Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System aircraft are flown by the 302nd Airlift Wing and by Guard wings in North Carolina, California and Wyoming. Air National Guard and firefighting get linked together in people’s heads, and it is not right for this wing. The firefighting at Rosecrans is the installation’s own 139th Fire Emergency Services, which is a base fire department, not an aerial firefighting mission.

Is there housing on Rosecrans Air National Guard Base?

I am going to give you an honest non-answer here rather than a confident wrong one. No official source I could find addresses family housing at Rosecrans in either direction. The wing’s own site does not cover it and the Defense Department installation entry has no housing section at all.

What I can tell you is how Guard service is structured. The wing’s own recruiting language describes the traditional commitment as one weekend a month and two weeks a year, framed around the ability to stay local and work part time while serving. Traditional Guard members build a civilian life in a community and drill from it. That is the shape of the thing, and it is why the housing conversation at a Guard base is fundamentally different from the one at an active duty installation.

Where is Rosecrans and how far is it from Kansas City?

The base is at 705 Memorial Drive in St. Joseph, Missouri, in Buchanan County. Our hub puts it at roughly an hour north of Kansas City.

It shares a field with Rosecrans Memorial Airport, which the City of St. Joseph owns and operates and describes as a large general aviation and military joint use airport located three miles northwest of St. Joseph and 35 miles north of Kansas City. The primary runway is 8,061 feet. That joint use arrangement is unusual and it is part of why the airfield can support the training mission it does.

For current market conditions in the area, our St. Joseph community page and our Buchanan County page both carry data for those specific areas rather than a metro wide average.

Should a Guard member buy near the base or near their civilian job?

Near the civilian job, most of the time, and this is where I differ from how a lot of agents would answer it.

You drive to the base one weekend a month. You drive to work five days a week. The math is not close. A 45 minute drive to drill is 24 trips a year. A 45 minute drive to a civilian job is roughly 250. Buy for the commute you make every day, not the one you make twelve times.

Where it gets more interesting is when the civilian job is in the Kansas City metro and the drill location is Rosecrans. That is an extremely common setup for this wing, and it opens up the whole Northland to you. Platte, Clay and Clinton County communities all sit between the metro and St. Joseph on the I-29 corridor, which means you can be close to metro employment and still make a reasonable run north for drill weekend. That is a genuine advantage of this particular base that a lot of members do not think through before they buy.

Two other Guard specific things worth planning for. Short notice activation in the middle of a transaction is real, and it is handled with financing extensions and power of attorney documentation rather than panic, but only if someone set it up in advance. And drill pay counts as qualifying income with the right documentation, which a lot of loan officers do not handle confidently. Our page on VA loans for Guard and Reserve members in Kansas City goes deeper on both.

What schools serve the St. Joseph area?

The St. Joseph School District serves the city, with its district office at 1415 N 26th Street, and it is a preschool through grade twelve district in Buchanan County.

School district information here is provided for informational purposes only and is not a recommendation. Attendance boundaries change, and families should verify the assignment for a specific address directly with the district before making a decision based on it.

Who this applies to and who it does not

This page is written for Guard members assigned to the 139th, for their families and for anyone weighing where to live around a Rosecrans drill commitment. If you are active duty PCSing into the Kansas City area, the installation that probably matters to you is Fort Leavenworth or Whiteman, and our PCS and relocation guide is the better starting point.

Three honest limits. I served at this wing and retired in 2022, so my direct knowledge has a date on it, and unit designations, aircraft and leadership all change. Anything on this page about the current state of the wing comes from the wing’s own published material rather than from memory, and the wing itself is the place to confirm it. Second, nothing here should be read as a statement about whether an assignment or a duty location is a good reason to buy a house. That depends on your service category, your civilian work and your timeline, not on the base. Third, if you are looking specifically in St. Joseph rather than the Northland corridor, we serve that market, but be honest with yourself about how often you will actually drive to Kansas City before you decide how far north to go.
