October 5, 2023: Smithville, Missouri Tour | Top Things to Do in Smithville
Today we’re going on a tour of unforgettable Smithville, Missouri. One of my favorite things about being a real estate agent is that I get to work all over the little pockets and small towns that surround the Kansas City metro, and Smithville has to be one of my favorites. It’s actually got a huge freshwater lake that is an Army Corps of Engineers lake. That means this lake is man-made. In fact, there were houses originally where the lake currently sits, and I got to sell one of those houses last year. Tons of history, tons of charm – I can’t wait to show you around.
Downtown Smithville
We’re starting right here in the heart of Smithville, its thriving downtown area. It’s packed with unique shops, delicious eateries, and a real sense of community. You’ll definitely want to explore Main Street, which is lined with quaint boutiques and art galleries like Jean’s Flowers & Gifts, Rose Cottage Boutique, and Warrior Shop (named for the hometown mascot). Don’t forget to grab a cup of coffee at Cornerstone for that perfect start to your day or end it with dinner at Humphrey’s Bar & Grill. It’s one of my favorite stops. The best part is that there are always cool events happening in the Main Street District, like this weekend’s Whiskey Trail. Being partial to whiskey myself, I can’t wait to check it out.
A little ways down Main Street is Heritage Park. There’s a playground, basketball courts, and three different baseball fields all right there. You’ll also find some historical buildings with an old-world charm that really bring this area it’s unique vibe. If you’re out for a walk to enjoy the scenery, you’ll find a half-mile trail. There’s plenty to do for everyone.
Smithville Lake
What Smithville is most known for is Smithville Lake. This is a 7200 acre outdoorsman’s paradise. If you like anything about the outdoors, I promise you’re going to find something to do here. There’s a beautiful golf course, there’s boating, there’s hunting, there’s fishing, there’s bike trails, there’s equestrian trails, there’s disc golf, there’s camping campfires, just about anything that you can think of to do outdoors that the Midwest might have to offer, you’re gonna find it right here at Smithville Lake. In fact, there are also two full-service marinas and a marina for sailboats only. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards and jet skis. When you think of prime places in Kansas City for outdoorsmen to do things, this has got to be one of the top spots.
I know for folks who live on the northern part of Kansas City, this is the place to be and the place to go on weekends. For the golf enthusiast,, you’re going to want to make sure that you check out Paradise Pointe Golf Complex. It sits right on the water on one of the peaks of the lake. I remember cruising right past that every single weekend while on the water and seeing golfers out there just having a great time. In fact, the golf complex includes two full 18-hole golf courses. If you’re a camping enthusiast, you need to check out Smith’s Fork Park. At this Campground there is full service everything you need with electric, water, and sewer connections for the RV. There are also perfect places for picnics, disc golf, and just hanging out with the family after you spent the day on the water.
Housing in a Lake Town
The real estate market in Smithville is interesting because there is no housing right on the lake since it’s an Army Corps of Engineer Lake. There are natural trails, and parks, and things that surround the lake. Just outside of there, are these neighborhoods that you see all over, especially the southern, western, and eastern kind of edge of the lake. What kind of housing can you get? This house has been fully remodeled, and in spite of being built in 2004, feels brand new. I love that the living room is on it’s own level. It makes gathering with family and friends feel like an event. You can tell the sellers put a lot of themselves into this place. It’s just a mile down the road from the lake itself, and was last listed at under $400,000. Yes, you read that right – a fully remodeled home less than a mile from one of the hottest lake destinations in Missouri, for less than $400,000. Like I said, the real estate market in Smithville is unique.
