Hey everyone! Welcome back to the blog. I’m thrilled about today’s post because we’re diving into one of the biggest things that make Kansas City famous: our barbecue! With over 100 barbecue restaurants in the metro area alone, Kansas City is a haven for barbecue enthusiasts like me. So, let’s get started on our barbecue adventure!
Gates Barbecue: A Taste of Tradition
Our first stop on this barbecue journey is Gates Barbecue, Kansas City’s oldest and most iconic barbecue joint. Established in 1946 by George W. Gates, Gates Barbecue revolutionized the city’s culinary landscape with its unique flavors and family-owned charm. From its famous spicy and tangy sauce to mouthwatering ribs and brisket, Gates Barbecue has been a cornerstone of Kansas City’s barbecue culture for generations.
I had the honor of chatting with Colin Gates, the great-grandson of George W. Gates, who shared insights into the family’s legacy and commitment to excellence. Colin’s passion for preserving the Gates Barbecue tradition reflects the deep-rooted pride and dedication that have defined the establishment for over seven decades.
Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue: From Gas Station to Gastronomic Gem
Our barbecue adventure continues at Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue, formerly known as Oklahoma Joe’s. Nestled inside a gas station, Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue is renowned for its mouthwatering meats and iconic Zman sandwich. From humble beginnings in Stillwater, Oklahoma, to its expansion into Kansas City, Joe’s has captured the hearts and taste buds of barbecue aficionados nationwide.
With lines often stretching out the door, Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue is a testament to the enduring allure of authentic barbecue and the enduring legacy of its founders. Whether indulging in their famous burnt ends or savoring a signature sandwich, Joe’s offers a culinary experience that is second to none.
Fiorella’s Jackstack: A Culinary Institution
Our final barbecue destination takes us to Fiorella’s Jackstack, a Kansas City institution steeped in tradition and culinary excellence. Founded in 1957 by Jack Fiorella and his wife, Jackstack has delighted patrons for over six decades with its gourmet menu and upscale dining experience. From succulent meats smoked over hickory wood to decadent desserts like their legendary carrot cake, Jackstack epitomizes the pinnacle of barbecue indulgence.
What sets Jackstack apart is its commitment to quality and innovation, offering patrons a sophisticated yet approachable dining experience. Whether enjoying a leisurely meal with family or savoring a decadent dessert, Jackstack ensures a memorable culinary journey for every palate.
Discovering Hidden Gems: Smokehouse BBQ
As a bonus, I wanted to highlight one of my favorite lesser-known barbecue joints: Smokehouse BBQ. Since 1987, Smokehouse has been serving up authentic barbecue cooked the old-fashioned way, with original brick pits and a commitment to tradition. Their signature Texas Hot sandwich and mouthwatering beans are a must-try for any barbecue enthusiast looking to explore Kansas City’s diverse culinary landscape.
Kansas City’s barbecue scene offers a tantalizing array of flavors and experiences, from time-honored traditions to innovative culinary creations. Whether indulging in Gates Barbecue’s fiery sauces, Joe’s Kansas City Barbecue’s legendary sandwiches, or Jackstack’s upscale dining experience, there’s something for everyone to savor and enjoy.
